Step by step

How to do a CPLC check

  1. 1

    Call the CPLC 24/7 call centre: 1102, 021-35662222, 021-35682222.

  2. 2

Give the operator the registration number, the engine number and the chassis number of the car or motorcycle you want to buy.

  3. 3

The operator checks them against CPLC’s stolen / snatched vehicle database and tells you the result.

  4. 4

Read the engine and chassis numbers off the vehicle itself, not only the papers — a match between the two is the point of the check.

  5. 5

Do the Excise Sindh record check as well, which confirms the registered owner.

Guide

What to know about CPLC checks

Both are printed in the registration book or smart card. On the car, the chassis number (VIN) is stamped on the body — commonly under the bonnet, on the floor by the front seat, or on a plate at the windscreen — and the engine number is stamped on the engine block. Have the seller show you both, and photograph them.

Excise Sindh’s online verification tells you who the car is registered to. CPLC tells you whether it has been reported stolen or snatched. Thieves use cloned plates and forged papers, so a clean Excise record alone is not enough in Karachi.

Call CPLC on 1102 (or 021-35662222 / 021-35682222) and police 15. Give the registration number, make, colour and place of the incident. CPLC enters the vehicle into its database once Police Control relays it — the same database buyers’ checks are run against.

When police recover a vehicle without an FIR having been lodged, CPLC handles its release from safe custody. Contact CPLC with the ownership documents to clear it.
