What changed for 2026-27

Punjab raised the rates for bigger cars from 1 July 2026: 0.2% → 0.3% of the invoice price for 1001–2000cc, and 0.3% → 0.4% above 2000cc. Cars up to 1000cc still pay Rs 20,000 once at registration. A 1500cc car invoiced at Rs 6 million now pays Rs 18,000 a year in provincial token, and a 2400cc car invoiced at Rs 15 million pays Rs 60,000.

The FBR advance tax collected with the token is the same in every province — see the full filer and non-filer table.

Guide

Punjab token tax explained

Above 1000cc, Punjab no longer uses fixed amounts by engine size. The tax is a share of the original invoice price — what the car cost when it was first bought — not today’s resale value. Every Rs 1 million of invoice price adds Rs 3,000 a year for 1001–2000cc and Rs 4,000 above 2000cc.

Cars up to 1000cc (Alto, Cultus, WagonR, Mehran) pay Rs 20,000 at registration and nothing yearly after that. If the car is sold within ten years, the buyer pays the lifetime token again, less 10% for each year since registration — see the transfer fee calculator.

Every token payment also carries the federal advance income tax (section 234 of the Income Tax Ordinance): from Rs 800 a year for 1000cc to Rs 10,000 above 2000cc. People not on the Active Taxpayers’ List are charged three times as much (the law says double, but Excise collects triple). It stops once a car has been used in Pakistan for more than ten years, and filers can adjust it against their income tax.

Electric cars pay 5% of the normal token (a 95% exemption). Paying after the due date adds a penalty, and an unpaid token shows up on MTMIS when you try to sell or transfer the car.
